Gold and taxes
Gold and fiscal aspects-article tax exempt according to § 25c Value Added Tax Act
We would like to point out to you that the gold bars we offer in our online shop meet all criteria required for exemption from value added tax.
In the following, you will quickly understand why this information is so important! Please also note:
At this point, we only give you general information, it has no legally binding nature. If you are in doubt, please contact your tax consultant or ask the tax office responsible for you.
In the following, you will find a brief summary of the most important fiscal aspects:
- Both in the European Union and in Switzerland, there is no VAT on gold that is purchased for investment purposes. This applies to all forms of so-called investment gold, which means nearly all gold coins and gold bars. Equally, no import sales tax must be paid if you import investment gold from one European country to another.
- However, exemption from value added tax applies only in accordance with certain conditions: the gold that is made into bars must have a purity of 995/1000, whereas gold coins may have a lower purity of 900/1000.
- The other three precious metals – platinum, palladium and silver, are classified for tax purposes as all other raw materials. This means that in general, and therefore also within the EU, value added tax must be paid in the case of purchase. In addition, the three precious metals mentioned above are subject to an import sales tax. Regarding the tax rate, the rate of the corresponding importing country is applicable in each case.
- When selling silver or gold bars as well as silver or gold coins, no tax will arise if the purchase of the precious metals in your possession was made more than twelve months ago and, as a result, the so-called speculation period was exceeded or the relevant tax allowances were not reached.
- This is one of the decisive reasons why we recommend that you only buy physical gold and silver, therefore, gold and silver coins as well as gold and silver bars.
